Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards 2012 –
Communication, Education and Empowerment Award Winner HiCub

The Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards and Finalists Forum took place in Sydney yesterday, where the High Country Urban Biodiversity (HiCub) Project won the Communication, Education and Empowerment Award.

Armidale Dumaresq Council’s (ADC) Cr Rob Richardson and David Carr, Project Director from Southern New England Landcare (SNELCC), attended the event in Darling Harbour.

“It was very exciting because I wasn’t sure we were going to win an award and when they called our name it felt like winning an Oscar,” said Cr Richardson. “It was fantastic!

“This award only came about because of the close collaboration between four New England councils, the work of dedicated staff, and a huge number of volunteers.”

The HiCub Project has jointly involved Armidale Dumaresq, Guyra, Uralla and Walcha Shire Councils. Other participating Council’s councillors also attended the event.

The HiCub Project was started in 2009 following a successful grant bid. The bid was to improve the ecological health of urban riparian lands and bushlands to address environmental damage due to weed invasion, erosion and improve the quality and diversity of the native vegetation and improve habitat linkages.

Further objectives of the project were to improve effectiveness of Councils and community effort toward environmental rehabilitation through improved integration, collaboration and greater knowledge transfer between stakeholders. This enables better monitoring and evaluation of these improvements, increasing long-term participation in urban system rehabilitation by community volunteers and improves resource use efficiency.

“It’s great to have these awards because it encourages people to take initiatives to improve the environment,” said Cr Richardson.
